Research: 62% of South Africans who use online dating lie on their profiles

Are you single? Getting older and still looking for the one? Have you been kissing frogs and not finding your prince?

Do you dread these holidays because at the family Christmas lunch the question is going to be asked AGAIN - when will you settle down and get married?

Do you have a venue, a dress, a caterer for your wedding but all you need is THE ONE?

So are you part of the 31% of the South African population who use online portals to find a hot date or meet new people?

Well, research has found that 62% of South Africans who use online dating lie on their profiles. A substantial amount of profiles created are based on lies about marital status, age, professions, sexual habits, and earnings.

This is research compiled by the Kaspersky Lab, a Russian multinational cybersecurity and antivirus provider.

The search for "the one" often exposes users to fake information, photos, malicious links, and scammers.

Tanya Khoury, Managing Director at ROI Africa says people lie on their profile because they believe they can separate their online persona from their real selves.

There are a lot of scammers of dating sites. They try to solicit money from women and end up having cyber relationships meaning at times they don't even meet.

Tanya Khoury, Managing Director at ROI Africa

Khoury says the most common lies are generic and are about one's weight, height and general appearance.

She urges those interested in online dating to take things slow as it can be quite fast. Khoury adds that if you meet someone from an online dating site, always make sure it in a public space.
