Earlier this week, there was some criticism against African National Congress (ANC) Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa for announcing the leaders he wants on his slate should he be elected the party's President.
ANC Secretary-General Gwede Mantashe described this announcement as unacceptable, but Ramaphosa says his announcement was based on interactions and nominations emerging from ANC structures.
ANC Chief Whip Jackson Mthembu has also shared his perspective on this, agreeing with Mantashe.
He says however the reproach directed at Ramaphosa should be applied across the board.
We fully agree with the Secretary-General but having said that such criticism should also go to everybody, it should not only be directed to him [Ramaphosa].— Jackson Mthembu, ANC Chief Whip
These slates have gone to ANC branches undercover, the only thing we agree with Cyril is that he has been honest and transparent.— Jackson Mthembu, ANC Chief Whip
The reality is some people have gone out to different branches under the cover of darkness, covertly they have sent their own preferred candidate list to branches. This is an ANC problem.— Jackson Mthembu, ANC Chief Whip
Mthembu says Ramaphosa announced his preferred candidate at the tail end of the nominations process and did not intend to influence the will of the branches.
He has shown his support for the list.
We fully agree with the pronouncement of names that he has mentioned, these are cadres of the movement who are indeed incorrupt.— Jackson Mthembu, ANC Chief Whip
