[LISTEN] Do authors make money in SA?

Jacques Pauw's the President's Keepers has continued to fly off the shelves with 50 000 copies expected to be ordered before December.

Ray White asks whether this is an anomaly or if other South African authors have experienced as much success.

Is authorship a lucrative career?

White spoke to Copywriter & Creative Head at King James, Paige Nick. She says each genre of writing comes with a different payoff.

If you get published internationally and your book goes out to auction and you receive advances [when the publisher pays you to publish your work] for each country that publishes your book, you can make a massive amount of money.

Paige Nick, Copywriter & Creative Head at King James.

So you publish traditionally in South Africa, I would say 90% of South African authors don't get an advance. So instead of getting an advance they give you a royalty per book sold.

Paige Nick, Copywriter & Creative Head at King James.

She says while people are now experimenting with indie publishing which means either self publishing or co-publishing, it is not a lucrative career in South Africa.

There are all these different layers and depending where you find yourself you can make a different amount of money.
