Tech expert Arthur Goldstuck says the price structure and payment model of Cell C’s new entertainment platform may draw in more South Africans.
The mobile network is set to launch its own content portal, titled 'Black'.
The platform will offer users sport, kids entertainment, music, video on demand and live TV.
It is open to all South Africans, not only Cell C subscribers.
Video packages will range from R5 per day to R389 per month on Black.
Here are some of the monthly packages on offer:
- HD movie purchase – from R49 to R169
- streaming service – R99 per month
- all-inclusive service – R389 per month for access to everything on the platform
- sports service – R5 for 24 hours of sports
Users can pay via credit card , alternatively Cell C subscribers can buy and rent content using prepaid airtime.

He says alternative streaming services such as Netflix and Showmax have proven that there is room for other competitors.
Cell C hopes the pricing will make video on demand more accessible to the majority of South African consumers.
The service will be launched on November 14.
