[LISTEN] JMPD and Revelation Church congregant weigh in on Sunday altercation
Eusebius McKaiser spoke about the video that has gone public showing an altercation between Revelation Church members in Claim Street, Hillbrow on Sunday, and the JMPD, resulting in an officer being assaulted and ending up in hospital.
Take a listen to these two differing views:
This incident was allegedly sparked over ongoing resident complaints of churchgoers parking cars
JMPD spokesperson Edna Mamonyane called in and explained her version of events. (01:42)
If a public road is blockaded and the public can't use it, and people call in and complain to the police, it is the duty of the police to go and investigate and check what is the problem.Edna Mamonyane, JMPD
When this happens, JMPD will go and tow those vehicles, insists Mamonyane.
She says on Sunday people exited the church, went outside and started attacking the officers.
Then church member Democracy called in and offered a different viewpoint. (07:40)
He explains that when JMPD came to two a member's vehicle, congregants tried to stop him.
He also claims that the officer fired his gun in the air in a warning shot despite there being young children in the vicinity.
Democracy acknowledges that congregants beating up the officer was not the right thing to do.
Beating him unconscious might be wrong.Democracy, Revelation Church member
