DA 'thrilled' over PAIA success as Fees Commission report is set for release

The Democratic Alliance says it is thrilled that President Jacob Zuma has answered calls to have the Fees Commision report released to the public.

On Friday, the DA submitted an application to the Presidency in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) to access the report.

The President is expected to release the document on Monday afternoon.

Last week, The Times reported plans of a 'shocking' announcement by the President introducing free education through a funding plan that goes against the findings of the Commission.

The plan is apparently devised by Zuma’s future son-in-law‚ Morris Masutha.

DA Shadow Minister for Higher Education, Belinda Bozzoli says special attention will have to paid to Masutha's advise.

We're going to have to read the report carefully. We know something of what it says because City Press has been leaking elements of it.

At the same time we are going to have to read what Morris Masutha's report proposed because it is becoming increasingly clear that the President is rather enamored with Morris Masutha rather than his multi-million rand commission of inquiry.

Reports suggest free education alone will cost an estimate of R30 billion.

Bozzoli says they are against the rumored suggestions.

We don't think that students who can afford to pay for higher education should be let off the hook. This is new money coming into the system from outside, from parents, from companies and that will all be rendered unnecessary by the Masutha scheme. Funding should be found for poor students.
