Black Friday is a thing, because everyone wants to be happy (and it’s not easy)

Black Flyday

I shop therefore I am? Kabous le Roux offers an alternative view, and a Black Friday deal that can give you lasting happiness.

Strong materialist values are associated with a pervasive undermining of people’s wellbeing, from low life satisfaction and happiness to depression and anxiety, to physical problems such as anxiety, and to personality disorders, narcissism, and antisocial behaviour.

Tim Kasser, psychologist and author of The High Price of Materialism

On Friday (24 November), “wants” become “needs” (or “must-haves”).

Enraged people, nay “consumers”, will trample over each other to spend money they don’t have on discounted smartphones, handbags, and shoes (because you can never have enough shoes).

They’ll shout at poorly paid, overworked staff members.

Courtesy – already is short supply – will vanish.

People don’t matter – things do.

All you need is love

Game has a range of must-have tech… Zando has a range of must-have fashion items… Takealot has crazy discounts on a range of must-haves...

All these "must-haves" have this in common: you don’t need them.

Experiences are worth more than you imagine (and “stuff” is worth far less)

Over the past 10 years, study after study on the topic showed how life experiences gives us lasting pleasure.

Material things, however, don’t.

Experiences meet deep-seated psychological needs. They’re often shared, giving us a sense of connection, and also form a bigger part of our sense of identity.

If you’ve climbed Kilimanjaro, that’s something you’ll always remember and talk about, long after all your Black Friday gadget has gone to the landfill.

In an interview with 702’s Eusebius Mckaiser, clinical psychologist Dr. Helgo Schomer highlights how materialism and the accumulating of “stuff” endanger mental health.

I decided that I'm going to use that money for life experience instead of accumulating other things... It's been the most liberating thing I've ever done.

Nqobile, CapeTalk/702 listener

A Black Friday deal that can last a lifetime

There are several Black Friday deals that do not involve the accumulation of more stuff.

For example; this “Black Flyday” deal from Travelstart has many domestic and international specials.

Do you know of any other "experiential" deals such as the one above?

Let us know! Please leave a comment below…
