Four tanks were seen heading toward Zimbabwean capital Harare on Tuesday.
Two other tanks are, according to Reuters, parked beside the main road from Harare to Chinhoyi, about 20km from the city.
One of the tanks, which was pointed in the direction of the capital, had come off its tracks.
A video showing tanks on a Zimbabwean road is doing the rounds on social media.
This comes a day after the head of the armed forces said he was prepared to “step in” to end a purge of supporters of ousted vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa.
General Constantine Chiwenga said the instability in Zanu-PF was afflicting the economy, causing serious cash shortages and soaring prices of basic commodities.
