Businesses raise almost R7 million to save water in 228 schools

It's been just a week since CapeTalk, in partnership with Shoprite, Bridgiot, Pragma and Stellenbosch University, launched the Smart Water Meter Challenge - and the pledges have been rolling in.

The campaign encourages other corporates (and even individuals) to pledge towards the installation of the Dropula units at schools where water consumption has been high.

Senior Lecturer at Stellenbosch University, Prof Thinus Booysen says the Smart Water Meter Challenge has been a great success. About 228 schools that have been sponsored to date.

We have reached our first 100 with Shoprite and have exceeded another 128 by last week Friday...

Prof Thinus Booysen, Senior Lecturer at University of Stellenbosch

The number of sponsorship has grown tremendously and we have already started with the installations.

Schools are given about a week to determine a baseline of how much water they are using currently before the device is installed, says Booysen.

There is definitely a lot we're going to have to do and definitely a lot of water to save. With 228 schools, we expect to save about 2 million litres of water per day.

Prof Thinus Booysen, Senior Lecturer at University of Stellenbosch

The campaign still needs about 42 more schools to be sponsored in order to hit the target. To make a pledge and sponsor a school, go to their website.
