Parental vigilance essential in averting drug-addicted kids, psychologist says

Clinical psychologist Khosi Jiyane says parents must always be attentive to their child's behaviour, and look out for signs of drug usage.

She explains that parental vigilance is important, adding that prevention is much easier than treating drug addiction.

Parents must talk to their children about the dangers of drugs from a young age and open the channels of communication, she says.

According to Jiyane, a child's behaviour could be a red flag that there is a deeper problem within the family unit.

Jiyane says that drug-testing children at home will not work for all parents and families.

She explains that parents will also have to come to terms with children who are on drugs.

Her advice to parents is that they seek professional help to deal with their child's drug problem and get children admitted to rehabilitation centres or treatment facilities, if they have the means.
