Is your driving instructor adequately trained to teach you to drive?

The head of the Southern African Institute of Driving Instructors, Pat Allan says it is concerning that instructors in South Africa have not been receiving training to become qualified instructors.

She says they are now trying to put a curriculum in place which will take about a year to be passed. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) was mandated to take the process forward.

In the history of South Africa nobody has trained the trainers and we wonder why there is so much carnage.

Allan says there is no legislation for driving schools at the moment but driving instructors are required to be registered. She says instructors are registered by provincial authorities which is unconstitutional.

We put in an application on an annual basis because the certificate is valid for only one year.

Here are some of the things to look out for when looking for a reputable instructor:

  • Valid instructor certificate

  • The driving school car should have dual control pedals (not compulsory)

  • The vehicle should be branded

  • Driving school should send a quote and invoice
