LISTEN: Sister of Esidimeni victim vents her anger at Qedani Mahlangu

"We want closure". This is the impassioned plea from Christine Nxumalo, a member of the Life Esidimeni Family Committee. Apart from losing her sister who died whilst in the care of an unlicensed NGO in the Esidiment tragedy, Nxumalo is also speaking on behalf of other families impacted by the scandal. She spoke to Stephen Grootes about her frustration at getting answers from the authorities.

As you can hear from the testimony yesterday, there was a lot of back and forth.

Christine Nxumalo, Member of Life Esidimeni Family Committee

The MEC (Qedani Mahlangu) is arrogant, Nxumalo says and she finds it shocking that they're proud of the plan they came up with to accommodate the 141 patients. Nxumalo goes on to say that if you’re as qualified as Dr Makgoba Manamela, then you should be able to understand people suffering with mental illness.

To be honest with you, it actually starts with incompetence. Wrong people in the wrong place. Because I don’t think they quite understand what it is that they are doing.

EWN Reporter Masaga Rahlaga explains that Manamela didn’t take any responsibility for the Life Esidimeni tragedy and identifies herself as the fourth person in the chain of command. Rahlaga adds that during Manamela’s testimony, she kept over emphasising that the team was responsible.

She didn’t take any responsibility, she started by saying that there was a hierarchy.
