Court victory a step towards reclaiming Cosatu for its members - Vavi

The Johannesburg High Court ruled that the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) must hold a special national congress on 13 and 14 July.

The Court says a petition submitted in 2013 by seven Cosatu unions (including the now ousted National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa) calling for the special national congress to resolve factional fights remains valid.

Cosatu president Sidumo Dlamini must now issue a notice of the congress to affiliates by the end of May.

Dlamini denies Court is forcing his hand

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) President Sdumo Dlamini says the federation has not been forced to call a special national congress and today's order (Monday, 11 May) is the result of an out of court settlement to maintain the union’s integrity.

We spoke to Zwelinzima Vavi, Former General Secretary of Cosatu, to ask him about his views on the High Court ruling that Cosatu must hold its long-awaited special national congress in July.

This is a victory for democracy and it takes us a step closer towards reclaiming Cosatu for its members.

Zwelinzima Vavi

We want a fighting organisation! If that won’t be through Cosatu, surely workers are calling on us to establish a truly independent organisation.
