Gwede says ousted Robert Mugabe must still be respected - Clement Manyathela

Earlier on Wednesday the African National Congress (ANC) held a press conference to brief the media on its readiness for its 54th Elective conference happening in 3 weeks time.

Clement Manyathela, EWN political reporter, says ANC Secretary-General, Gwede Mantashe, also touched on the momentous events in Zimbabwe, saying that former president Robert Mugabe must still be respected and we should celebrate him for the role he played over last decade.

He adds that Mantashe also said that the people of Zimbabwe must go back and help rebuild Zimbabwe.

I remember being at Luthuli House and hearing the secretary general criticising Mugabe and he effectively said he destroyed the economy of Zimbabwe.

Mantashe spoke about Mugabe being a Pan-Africanist and having played a role in the liberation of Zimbabwe reports Manyathela.

Manyathela goes on to say what was important to him was how the ANC is categorising what happened in Zimbabwe as a coup. The ANC seems to suggest because there was no bloodshed, whatever action was taken was okay, he adds.

An extension has been granted to various ANC branches in Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal which failed to meet their nomination list deadline after last week.

They call it a mop up period.

Manyathela explains that the provinces lagging behind have until Saturday to complete their branch nominations.
