Lynette Maart, Black Sash National Director and IFP MP Mkhuleko Hlengwa react to IMC intervention on SAPO and SASSA.

The inter-ministerial committee (IMC) on social security announced in Parliament that an overarching implementation protocol between the South African Post Office (SAPO) and the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) was agreed to over the last 10 days.

The protocol finally gives the Post Office the chance to prove its capacity in providing core banking functions and producing new Sassa cards, previously denied to it by Sassa's bid.

Lynette Maart , Black Sash National Director says that despite this agreement there are still many opportunities for outside interference. Maart says that that this is because protocol set between SASSA and SAPO seems like it is not finalised.

When they talk about a protocol, leading into an agreement, there is still a lot of uncertainty on what SAPO's role will be.

IFP MP Mkhuleko Hlengwa says they they are cautiously accepting the progress the IMC has made, but they are also concerned.

Hlengwa says this concern lies in the fact the the IMC has only been constituted about two weeks ago. Prior to that it was chaired by the president, and was a dismal failure, says Hlengwa.

It is in the main a new IMC and the progress reports indicate to us that a lot more work needs to be done, particularity around areas of cost effectiveness, which covers all areas where the Post Office will be assessed.

IFP MP Mkhuleko Hlengwa
