Will South Africa have enough chickens during the festive?

The outbreak of avian flu in the Western Cape had a massive impact on the poultry sector and saw over two million birds being killed as a result.

With Christmas just 5 weeks away, CapeTalk listeners are wondering if they will be able to have chicken and duck in time for Christmas and New Year.

Deputy general manager at Shoprite Checkers, Jaco Brand says they are working closely with their major producers to ensure that they have enough stock and that it doesn't run out during the festivities.

The Western Cape has been worst affected compared to other provinces and so far we have arranged to move stock from other provinces to ensure that we have sufficient stock on shelves.

Jaco Brand, Deputy General Manager for Foods Buying at Shoprite Checkers

Brand says they haven't really moved into importing poultry products but have been working with local suppliers.
