Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane says the department will be limiting water supply to 30 municipalities.

Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane says defaulting municipalities will have to honor their commitments and pay out their debt.

Fifty-nine summonses have been issued to non-paying municipalities with over R10 billion owed to the department.

On Monday, Mokonyane announced the department will now be suspending or limiting water supply to 30 municipalities.

She spoke to Stephen Grootes on the Breakfast Show.

We want all our municipalities who owe government to pay and honor their commitment. In the event they still resist to even make the necessary arrangements to pay their current account, never mind their debt, we will be left with no option but to reduce the pressure of the water supply to them.

They will have to plan their own distribution such that the end user does not get affected.

Answering questions over the drought in the Western Cape, Mokonyane says the department has intervened and is working together with the provincial government to provide alternative water sources.

This is the reality, the Western Cape this year did not receive any winter rain and it was only after the failed winter rain that the provincial government finally decided to declare the province a disaster.
