How new top cop plans to restore South Africans' confidence in police

Newly appointed National Police Commissioner General Khehla Sitole says he plans to restore South Africans' confidence in Saps through a community policing strategy and hopes to build a united team in order to meet these expectations.

Sitole was officially appointed after accepting the Sword of Command in Pretoria on Monday at a ceremony officiated by Police Minister Fikile Mbalula.

He says he will only work to fix what is broken in the organisation.

The organisation is facing some difficulties....We want to correct or face what we call leadership challenges. It requires a strong collective leadership. One of my priorities is to build a united team in order to meet the expectations of the community.

We have got the communities, their confidence has dropped a little bit so one needs to bring that confidence back but you can't bring that confidence back without involving them.

Sitole says he will not involve himself in politics.

Policing itself is a subject that focuses on the safety of the country, clearing society of criminals and I have no role in politics, I do have a political executive who will do that.
