Police fail to attend murder autopsies - research

Forensic psychologist, Gerard Labuschagne says failure by police to attend autopsies poses a huge risk, effectively hampering investigations.

Research by the Wits Health Sciences Faculty has revealed how officers fail to adhere to police regulations on attending murder autopsies.

The published research papers looked at autopsies conducted at the Hillbrow mortuary in 2016 on victims of sexual violence and gunshots.

Labuschagne explains the research in more detail.

We actually have three studies, the first looked at the period of 2006 and 2012 and there we found detectives in 2006, 6 out of 1 356 autopsies were attended by someone from the police.

He says one of the studies indicates varying excuses from police that he believes do not hold any water.

I think often it just has to do with policeman not liking to attend autopsies, but then you don't have that valuable information that the police officer is going to need to make sure that they are going to do an accurate autopsy.
