South African Revenue Service commissioner Tom Moyane was grilled at a meeting of Parliament’s Standing Committee on Finance earilier today for the way he has managed the affair of top tax official Jonas Makwakwa.
Makwakwa was recently taken back to SARS after a year of precautionary suspension following a report by the Financial Intelligence Centre of a series of suspicious transactions.
Yunus Carrim, Chairperson of Parliament's Standing Committee on Finance says that Moyane dodged most of the questions put forth by both the ANC and the DA, which does not look good.
While Carrim says that there is no evidence against the allegations against Jonas Makwakwa, it is their duty as Parliament's Standing Committee on Finance to investigate all accusations of corruption - no matter where it comes from.
Mr Moyane, regrettably, did not answer many of the questions - considerable overlap between what the DA raised and the ANC raised.— Yunus Carrim, Chairperson of Parliament's Standing Committee on Finance
I have said in the presence of Mr Moyane, that his behavior in regard to this, that his conduct in regard to this does not sever him, SARS or Mr Makwakwa and this Elksie well. They may very well be innocent, but they are handling this wrong.
