Tom Moyane given deadline to explain Makwakwa's reinstatement

SARS commissioner Tom Moyane on Tuesday appeared in front of Parliament’s Standing Committee on Finance to present the Sars annual financial report. Moyane's session was overshadowed by a grilling from MPs about Jonas Makwakwa.

Makwakwa was reinstated by Moyane after a lengthy suspension, triggered by a Financial Intelligence Centre report about suspicious transactions in his accounts.

Moyane had said that Makwakwa was reinstated because the law firm, Hogan Lovells, found no misconduct on his part.

Chairman of Parliament’s finance committee, Yunus Carrim says that Parliament wanted to see the documentation that explains Makwakwa's acquittal.

It is very important that Sars releases documentation.

Carrim says Parliament would also want to know why it took Sars this long to finally admit that Makwakwa's disciplinary inquiry was restricted to issues around misconduct and not irregular transactions.

This was revealed when Hogan Lovells said on its website that it did not directly investigate the transactions identified by the Financial Intelligence Centre but that of misconduct.

Moyane indicated that because that's a criminal matter, it's been referred to the Hawks.

Parliament has raised it with him recently that it is required of him to go to the Hawks and find out what progress has been made on Makwakwa's case.
