Historical victory as Parliament passes paternity leave bill
The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) has successfully convinced Parliament to adopt its bill on paternity leave.
The Labour Laws Amendment Bill is the first private members' bill, introduced by ACDP MP Cheryllyn Dudley.
The bill highlights the importance of parental leave for fathers.
Ray White spoke to Dudley to find out more.
Paternity leave is 10 days and then there is adoption leave which is 10 weeks, and if there are two adults involved, one can apply for the adoption leave, the other for the parental leave. It also applies to the agreements in terms of surrogacy and also just provides for where there is a stillbirth or miscarriage in the third trimester.Cheryllyn Dudley , ACDP Member of Parliament
So it is very good news for dads but also for moms and dads in general.Cheryllyn Dudley , ACDP Member of Parliament
Maternity leave of 4 months has been around 55% (of salary). With this amendment, it goes to 66% of a person's salary, so it is not a full paid leave.Cheryllyn Dudley , ACDP member of Parliament
The father's name must be on the child's birth certificate in order to qualify.
Paternity leave may only be granted once a year.
