LISTEN: SARS says they handled Makwakwa issue the right way

Following the questioning of SARS commissioner Tom Moyane by Parliament's Standing Committee on Finance regarding Jonas Makwakwa’s disciplinary inquiry, the South African Revenue Service (Sars) released a statement slamming media reports for suggesting Moyane acted improperly.

Makwakwa was reinstated this month after being cleared of all charges in his disciplinary hearing. He was placed on suspension in September 2016, months after the FIC sent its report to Moyane.

Luther Lebelo, SARS Group Executive on Employee Relations says that after receiving the allegations against Makwakwa, they tried to meet with the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) director, but received no help there.

Following this, Lebelo says they approached the police.

The police told us we should not worry about opening a to case, because FIC itself already had given the file to them with an inquiry. Then from there, the second step was the disciplinary action.

Lebelo says after both Makwakwa and his co-accused Kelly-Ann Elskie did satisfy in their disciplinary action inquiry they were suspended.

Makwakwa has been cleared of the accusations and has been reinstated at SARS, but Lebelo says they are unhappy as Makwakwa breached the terms of his suspension.

In the process while they were doing the investigation, Mr Makwakwa made a call to a SARS employee while he was on suspension. According to our policies, you cannot make calls to SARS employees without permission while on suspension. On the basis of that we are no happy.

While there are questions on whether SARS acted accordingly when dealing with Makwakwa, Lebelo maintains her have.
