Top cop has Cape's gangsterism scourge in his sights

The new Police Commissioner General Khela Sithole says he is determined to stabilise gangsterism in the Western Cape as well as Eastern Cape in the next three months.

He says his priority is to ensure the authority of the state is enforced in ending violence in crime ridden provinces.

I have established a gang combating and prevention plan which is specifically targeting the top two provinces, Western Cape and Eastern Cape.

General Khela Sithole, new Police Commissioner

CapeTalk's Kieno Kamies asked him about Major-General Jeremy Vearey who was demoted to a position he had previously filled as commander of the Cape Town cluster of police stations in 2016.

Vearey was was head of police anti-gang unit in the Western Cape when he was demoted. He put behind bars many gang bosses and was determined to fight gangsterism in the Cape Flats.

Sithole says as the new commissioner he will make sure that Vearey's expertise will be put to good use.

One of my top priorities is the optimal utilisation of the capacity that the organisation has.

General Vearey, I am to make sure he is optimally utilised... there will be no member of the service who is earning a salary who will be handicapped not to unleash their skills. All of them will be optimally utilised and that includes General Vearey.
