The water and sanitation minister spoke to host Koketso Sechane about the water crisis and the need to find new sources of water.

Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane spoke to Koketso Sechane, standing in for Eusebius McKaiser about the water situation in the country.

She says South Africa has been living under the pretext that there is an abundance of water and an emphasis needs to be placed on behavioral change.

The department has been working to resolve the current water crisis, with dam levels decreasing in parts of the country such as the Western Cape, she adds.

Mokonyane says they are exploring multiple ways to generate new sources of water.

South Africans are using more volumes compared to any other nation we have, in fact we are the fourth.

Nomvula Mokonyane, Water and Sanitation Minister

If there can be behavioural change there will never be Day Zero, the day when we say there is absolutely nothing left to use.

Nomvula Mokonyane, Water and Sanitation Minister

We need to explore groundwater, hence now six licenses will be issued here in the Western Cape so that we are able to explore other areas to generate new sources of water.

Nomvula Mokonyane, Water and Sanitation Minister

She says restrictions will continue.

Our dam levels are not at a position where we can say we are home and dry, hence we are continuing with restrictions particularly in the areas that have missed the winter rains such as the Western Cape.
