'18 Limpopo schools we visited in late July were in really shocking condition'

In the wake of young Michael Komape death in a pit toilet, Equal Education visited 18 Limpopo schools in the Capricorn District.

The school visits were a response to calls for action from the community and promises by the education department to repair the water, sanitation and electricity problems.

In Equal education's recently released report on the state of these schools, it says the situation continues to be dire and could well see another tragic case like that of Michael Komape occurring.

Equal Education researcher Nicola Soekoe talks to 702's Bongani Bingwa about the lack of urgency seen on the part of the department and unkept promises.

She says the Limpopo provincial education department was meant to release the plans to implement the norms and standards, and this did not happen..

When the department did finally release the plans, they were the wrong ones...they have shown a lack of urgency.

Nicola Soekoe, Equal Education researcher

What we observed in schools when we visited in late July were really shocking conditions.

Nicola Soekoe, Equal Education researcher

She describes infrastructure that had collapsed and toilet blocks on the verge of collapse,

We heard from learners who were afraid to go to the bathroom when it was storming or raining because the metal doors on the toilets would shake, and the walls of the toilet would shake.

She says when Equal Education met with the department it was clear the officials were unaware of the deadlines required by law. yet she says the province insists no schools violate the norms and standards deadline - which means all schools have access to water and sanitation.

Soekoe says this was certainly not the case.

The organisation is demanding clean and reliable water, safe and dignified sanitation, and an explanation in writing on how water and sanitation plans will be implemented - by the 8 January 2018.
