Will DD Mabuza have the support of branches in call for "consensus leadership"?

Political analyst Karima Brown says David "DD" Mabuza might not receive the support of African National Congress (ANC) branch members in Mpumalanga after he proposed the party does away with slate politics.

The Mpumalanga Premier and ANC provincial chairperson called for a "consensus leadership" instead.

The province is expected to consolidate branch nominations for the party’s leadership race, on Friday.

His instructions of course was no name should be written on the papers that people are going to be putting forward, they should be writing the word unity and we are going to see whether he has the support of the branches. I doubt very much that is what is going to come out.

I think what DD Mabuza did was to develop a smart strategy to keep the main factions guessing so that it can increase his ability to leverage and to of course negotiate for himself, a position.

Karima Brown, political analyst

Here is the difficulty that DD Mabuza is sitting with, he is the deputy president on the candidate on the NDZ slate but it is increasingly becoming obvious that President Zuma and others are pushing for the possibility of enlarging the top six and having two deputy presidents.
