Naspers chair Koos Bekker speaks out amid allegations MultiChoice paid kickbacks to SABC to influence govt's encryption policy.

Naspers chairperson Koos Bekker has denied any impropriety in the negotiation of contracts between Naspers subsidiary, MultiChoice, and the SABC.

It's alleged that MultiChoice sought to pay the SABC R100 million for its 24 hour news channel, in exchange for its political influence over digital migration.

The allegations come after a copy of minutes of a meeting held between MultiChoice and the SABC in 2013 surfaced.

Former communications minister Yunus Carrim has also claimed that Bekker was vehemently against encryption.

There have been calls to probe payments MultiChoice made to both the SABC and formerly Gupta-owned ANN7.

Bekker says dropping ANN7's channel from MultiChoice does not serve democracy, particularly ahead of the ANC's elective conference this month.

He claims South Africans are projecting their concerns over corruption onto the pay TV giant.

The concerns are real... We were slow to respond.

We have subsidiaries all over the world. We have to be careful not to override the boards.

They [citizens] can't get to the Guptas.. but they have MultiChoice at hand.

Koos Bekker, Naspers chairperson

[Citizens] are maximising the pain and discomfort for MultiChoice, embarrassing them and baiting them like a bear.

Koos Bekker, Naspers chairperson

You cannot fault MultiChoice for signing the [ANN7] contract.

Koos Bekker, Naspers chairperson

There's absolutely nothing illegal or improper about the whole thing.

Koos Bekker, Naspers chairperson

I have see nothing that's criminal.
