Dr van Zyl says that South Africa has one of the best HIV programmes in the world, and great strides have been made in terms of how far we've come. She adds that they don’t have everyone on treatment, but they're working on it and getting somewhere.

A lot of people aren’t aware of the fact that they are living with HIV and I’m primarily talking about males.

Women access healthcare more often than men says Dr van Zyl. A lot of men do proxy testing, this involves guessing their status by assessing their partner she adds. If their partner is breastfeeding, then some men think they’re fine and feel that they don’t need to get tested says van Zyl.

If you’re alive, and you’re sexually active you need to know your status.
