Phophonyane is set alongside an incredible waterfall that tumbles over some of the oldest rocks in the world says Hilton-Barber. She adds that the swimming pool at the top of the waterfall is incredible, and you can get a view of the mountains and river.

The accommodation:

Take your pick from their luxury tents, self-catering cottages or traditional beehive thatched huts says Hilton-Barber. She adds that the rates vary according to the type of accommodation, but budget R1 200 per person per night.

The activities:

Hilton-Barber says that the lodge is set in a private nature reserve - which means lovely walking trails through the forest and alongside the river. There's amazing bird life and you can do guided walks she adds.

The food:

Phophonyane has a lovely restaurant called The Driftwood Restaurant says Hilton-Barber. She adds that there is a comfortable lounge next door, with books, games and artwork.
