Proposal to expand ANC's top six an attempt to 'contain contestation' - analyst

Gauteng ANC's proposal for increased party leadership is an attempt to contain contestation within the governing party, says political analyst David Maimela.

Gauteng ANC's general council resolved that the party’s national leadership needs to be increased with an additional deputy president and deputy secretary general.

Maimela says calls to expand the so-called 'top six' are a sign of anxiety within the ANC and efforts to do away with slate politics as the part struggles with unity.

At the same time, Maimela says there is no need for new political parties in light of Makhosi Khoza's new organisation.
