Activists call for a specialised sexual offence court in Khayelitsha

Activists convened outside the Khayelitsha Magistrate's Court on Tuesday calling for a specialised sexual offences courtroom to be added to the facility.

Advocacy co-ordinator at Rape Crisis, Jeanne Bonde says people turned out in their numbers to support the protest. She says even passers-by came to join when they heard what the protest was all about.

I think that speaks to the importance of the issue, the real need for a sexual offences court in Khayelitsha. The fact that people had no idea when they got up this morning that they will be protesting and decided to join us.

It was really powerful to be able to hand over a memorandum to deputy minister of justice, Mr John Jeffrey who also reiterated the unacceptability of how long sexual offences cases take to be processed and committed himself to meeting with relevant stakeholders.

Bonde says Jeffrey spoke about the need to give this matter attention so that Rape Crisis and other activists don't have to come back to protest outside the courts for the third time about the same issue.

We will obviously hold him to that promise and hopefully have a celebration next year.
