Eskom Inquiry: Committee chair rattled by Hawks presence

Eskom executives are appearing before the Public Enterprise's Committee looking into state capture.

On Tuesday, the utility's chairperson Zethembe Khoza accused suspended CFO Anoj Singh of lying to Public Enterprises Minster Lynne Brown about the company's dealings with Trillian.

Continuing the inquiry on Wednesday, the committee’s acting chairperson Zukiswa Rantho revealed that Hawks officials had arrived to question her.

Eyewitness News report Rahima Essop has attended the inquiry and has more on these developments.

The acting chairperson of this portfolio committee revealed that she was unable to focus on what was going on because she had received word that Hawks investigators want her details.

In order to understand why MPs will assume the Hawks were here to intimidate them, one has to look at the context of the situation. Background is essential. There have been behind the scenes shenanigans in which MPs have been intimidated.

Rahima Essop, EWN reporter

Essop reports that once it emerged Hawks investigators were in Parliament, MPs adjourned the meeting to confer about how to proceed.

They came back about 15 minutes later to clarify that the Hawks were here, but they meant no harm and that investigators want to assist the committee in whatever way possible.

Essop says Rantho was nonetheless rattled by the incident.
