Life Esidimeni: Selebano grilled for not heeding warnings about patient moves

The suspended Gauteng health HOD Dr Barney Selebano returned to the stand at the Life Esidimeni arbitration where he is answering questions about the 143 mentally ill patients that died after being moved to unlicensed NGOs.

EWN reporter Masego Rahlaga says Selebano has been questioned about the reason the decision was taken to move the mentally ill patients from Life Esidimeni.

The Health Department stated that it was facing fiscal pressure but the Health Ombudsmen's report made it clear no money was saved by moving the patients. In fact, it cost more.

Lawyers representing 55 families asked Selebano why he didn't listen to the warnings about the move.

They asked him why didn't he heed the warnings of the people, why they didn't listen to so many people who sent them letter after letter telling them that the project was dangerous and it wouldn't be able to work.
