Author of best-selling autobiography 'Killing Karoline' Sara-Jayne King shares her life story and opens up about writing her book.

Author and CapeTalk host Sara-Jayne King has opened up about writing her best-seller memoir, Killing Karoline.

She was born Karoline King in 1980 and was a result of an interracial affair, which was illegal under apartheid’s Immorality Act.

Her white British mother was married to a white South African man, but fell pregnant by her black lover and colleague.

The discovery that her biological father was black, and that she was an illegitimate baby, led to an elaborate cover-up and hurried overseas adoption.

She fell pregnant, wasn't sure whose child she was carrying and later on went to marry her white boyfriend.

Sara-Jayne King, author and CapeTalk host

On the first of August 1980 [she] gave birth to me and called me Karoline. It wasn't immediately apparent that I wasn't her white husband's child.

Read: CT's Open Book Fest was a hit (and bestseller Sara-Jayne King has the receipts)

A plan had to be concocted to get rid of this baby.

The process of writing the book was almost like being re-traumatised.

Writing the book, I realised how much my past had come to define me.

Sara-Jayne King, author and CapeTalk host

Hearing people's response to the book, I'm able to find my healing. It was the toughest thing I've ever done.
