'Waste Shark' cleans up plastic in the ocean

One of the biggest problems facing our oceans worldwide is plastic pollution. Marine Technologies have come up with an innovative solution to help combat this problem.

They have created the 'water shark' drone that moves through the ocean collecting plastic that is later recycled.

Oliver Cunningham, Commercial Officer Ran Marine Technologies says that the plastic problem is beyond just physical waste.

If you start to look into the science and learn what the chemicals there are inside plastic, and what they actually do on a chemical and molecular level - it's really quite shocking.

The fact is, any one of us who eats seafood is being poisoned.

Cunningham says that the Water Shark is relatively new to the market, with their first sale made in the Netherlands. He adds that the current model of the Water Shark is designed for inland and coastal water.

We built it to be able to be agile enough to navigate confined spaces and tight angles. And that's because the lion's share of plastic that hits the ocean comes from land.
