What makes SA’s largest independent insurer and one of our best employers tick?

Hollard group, the largest independent insurance company in South Africa, was founded in 1980 by Robert Enthoven whose family still owns most of the firm.

Hollard provides short-term and life cover and is well-known for developing prepaid insurance that it sells in “starter packs” through retailers.

It frequently ranks among the best companies in South Africa to work for.

Hollard has a footprint in Namibia, Mozambique, Botswana, Australia, India, Pakistan, China, United Kingdom and 10 other countries.

We interviewed Hollard Group CEO Nic Kohler about the science behind this innovative insurer.

Nic Kohler, Hollard Group CEO

Hollard is founded on the principle of doing well by doing good. We’re always looking for opportunities; I think the CEO Sleepout campaign is excellent. If capitalism is to survive capitalists have to develop a heart.

The Enthovens don’t interfere with the running of the business.

We have about five million customers and sell about a million funeral policies per year.

South Africans are under-insured.

Nic Kohler, Hollard Group CEO

Hollard is proudly South African and we’ll remain that way. We have don’t have plans to go public.
