interview
ANC presidential candidate

Dr Mathews Phosa says that organisations like PAC called them traitors, there was a lot of doubt that we wouldn’t succeed.

Dr Nakedi Mathews Phosa was born on the 1st September 1952 in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga. This anti-apartheid activist was a former premier of Mpumalanga and a member of the National Executive Committee for the ANC.

Dr Phosa says that many people call him by the name Nakedi. He adds that he also uses the name for his poetry writing. There are others who call me Freddy which was my MK name says Dr Phosa.

Dr Phosa is an attorney by profession and he was one of the first four members of the ANC to enter South Africa from exile in 1990.

When we were asked to come back to South Africa to start the negotiations, we were told that our task was to create a new South Africa and impose peace on violence says Dr Phosa.

The whole world began to say, here’s someone who’s able to live above his pain, above his bitterness, above his anger.

Dr Phosa says that organisations like PAC called them traitors and there was a lot of doubt that we wouldn’t succeed. The whole spirit of the negotiation was to find a basis for a new democratic South Africa says Dr Phosa.

That was a message of hope that if we sat together – we would be able to find a solution.

As a result of the first fully inclusive democratic elections in 1994, Dr Phosa was appointed as the first premier of Mpumalanga, a position which he held until 1999. In 1994, President Mandela wrote a message saying ‘ I will return’, and that message was one of hope says Dr Phosa.

Explaining that there is hope. Even if we sit in prison cell there’s hope – even if we sit in exile.

Dr Phosa also spearheaded Nelson Mandela's reconciliation initiatives between the government and the Afrikaans speaking community.

Dr Phosa says that 85% of his subjects were in Afrikaans. You end up being able to smell the rain in Afrikaans he adds.

Imagine doing Mathematics in Afrikaans, general Science in Afrikaans, those are Science subjects.

Dr Nakedi Mathews Phosa, attorney, former premier of Mpumalanga and Presidential hopeful

My Afrikaans book which is prescribed from grade 5 – matric is useful by black and white students which makes me happy says Dr Phosa. He adds that his English book, ‘Chants of Freedom’ contains revolutionary poems inspired by his exile. Dr Phosa says that the book is about defying the roles of different stakeholders and essentially calling for a new South Africa.

Dr Phosa says that people were tired of Apartheid. He adds that South Africa has been through 300 years of racial division and oppression Mandela wasn’t a perfect person says Dr Phosa. He would always say I’m not a saint and I’ve made my mistakes he adds.

He made his mistakes in life but they were insignificant compared to what he did positively to the nation and the world.

Dr Nakedi Mathews Phosa, attorney, former premier of Mpumalanga and Presidential hopeful

Dr Phosa says that If you worked with Mandela every day, you have no other agenda except to promote what he stood for as your President.

In 2001, Cyril Ramaphosa, Tokyo Sexwale and Dr Phosa were investigated in connection with an alleged plot to oust former President Thabo Mbeki which they were cleared from. Dr Phosa unsuccessfully ran for the post of ANC Deputy President in 2012. Cyril Ramaphosa received 3,018 votes and was elected deputy president of the ANC, convincingly defeating Dr Mathews Phosa, who received 470 votes.

On June 11th 2017, Dr Phosa officially announced his intention to seek the Presidential nomination in December 2017. Dr Phosa is currently running for the presidential nomination of the ANC which will be decided this year.

[WATCH] As Dr Phosa says Bathabile Dlamini is childish, irresponsible and has misspoken on the issue.
