Opinion: 'Moenie panic nie' - Stephen Grootes

The presidency has refuted reports of draft regulations for a state of emergency.

According to a copy of the proposed laws seen by the Rapport newspaper, any security officials will have authority to search property or cut communication channels such as cellphones or the internet.

Stephen Grootes gives his take on the matter.

Sometimes we forget how important our constitution is, the section on a State of Emergency is contained in our Bill of Rights, it's in a specific clause around the limitation of rights.

It also says a judge can decide on whether a the declaration of a state of emergency is valid or not so I guess the message around State of Emergency, the talk and chatter around it is moenie panic nie. I think we can return the canned goods...
