Midvaal mayor steps in to help rebuild Vaal Marina after tornado

Two help centres have been set up in Vaal Marina after a tornado swept through the area on Monday evening leaving at least 300 people displaced and 50 others injured.

EWN reporter Mia Lindeque, is in the Mamello area where a help centre has been set up to assist those affected by the tornado.

According to Lindeque, a cleanup operation is underway to remove the debris from the destroyed homes.

Just a short while back, I saw a group of single mothers running around trying to get help to rebuild their homes just before it gets dark... There is just a sombre mood here, people are just trying to see what they can save - they don't know where they going to get money to feed their family - it's just a devastating scene...

The Red Cross officials have arrived to assist with food parcels, says Lindeque. She says she spotted a water truck provided by the municipality and Mayor Bongani Baloyi said that more aid workers are on the way.

Speaking to CapeTalk/702's Ray White, Baloyi says there are about 500 shacks that have been completely destroyed.

We have arrived here with some building materials and manpower to assist erecting the shacks. We also have some food parcels which we will be distributing shortly after 1 o'clock in the Mamello Community Hall.

Baloyi says they are trying to cover as much ground as possible before dark. As a temporary measure, they also brought some tents which will be erected as the day progresses.

The municipality is receiving a lot of support from the district municipality as well as provincial government, says Baloyi.

First priority is given to those who are unable to afford to re-build.

We expect that by later on this evening we would have covered more ground.
