The wedding industry is big.
Nearly 190 000 couples get married every year in South Africa.
10 to 15% of weddings are called off, according to the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud's (CGSO).
Consumer journalist Wendy Knowler says some wedding venues have cancellation policies that are not in line with the Consumer Protection Act (CPA).
She says bridal couples should check the terms and conditions before signing a contract with a wedding venue.
Some venues charge a 25% cancellation fee, while others do not refund money if they cannot fill the date.
Other wedding vendors such as caterers, photographers, decor providers also have similar cancellation policies.
Knowler advises that there always be a detailed contract in place between bridal couples and wedding vendors.
The CPA states that suppliers are required to provide proof of their direct losses which justify their cancellation fee.

Illness, death in the family, or financial constraints are among the common reasons why couples cancel weddings, she explains.
