[LISTEN] R300 million recovered from defaulting municipalities

The water and sanitation minister addressed the media by announcing that R300 million has been recovered from defaulting municipalities from across the country.

The spokesperson for the Minister of Water and Sanitation Mlimandlela Ndamase joined Bongani on the line to talk about this achievement and the outcome of municipals who refuse to pay.

Ndamase says that they are happy because, certain individuals, including the South African local government associations, accused them of attempting to extort resources that were never there.

Some of these municipalities do receive payment for their water services especially from the live commercial users.

Ndamase says that they have commitments amounting to R300 million which they hope to receive in the next two weeks.

They are five municipalities that have failed to contact the Department and quite frankly who have simply ignored the notices that we have sent to them.

The overall outcome for those failing to pay is a restriction of the supply by 20%, which will hopefully encourage them to react to the situation seriously, he adds.
