ANC 2017 Elective Conference

#StateCaptureJudgment could cause reputational damage to the ANC

The Pretoria High Court dismissed President Zuma's bid to review the State Capture report.

Zuma was ordered to personally pay the costs of his failed bid.

Just how will this recent court judgment affect the upcoming ANC National Elective Conference to be held in Nasrec in the next two days?

Busines Day political editor, Natasha Marrian says the judgment will definitely have some kind of impact on the outcome of the conference.

These kind of judgment can only further harm and cause reputational damage to the ANC. We know what kind of impact the Nkandla judgment had on the ANC's performance in local government elections last year.

Natasha Marrian, Busines Day political editor

Marrian says if the delegates going to the elective conference this weekend still want to continue with a candidate who is still under Jacob Zuma's political machinery, the ANC will have to face the consequences.

She says although those who are in Zuma's camp are accusing the judiciary of being captured, the majority of the ANC members are starting to realise that the courts have actually being pushed to intervene in these matters because of the President and his own conduct.

If you look at the ANC's statement yesterday, Zizi Kodwa made it clear that it was the decision of the NEC that he should implement the judgement, which means they do not see any need to further appeal on this matter.

Natasha Marrian, Busines Day political editor

Marrian says in an ideal world this could increase the chances of Cyril Ramaphosa winning the elections but the ANC's internal democracy has eroded quite significantly.

We know there's a lot of money exchanging hands, we know that there's a lot of manipulations of delegates who are rightfully supposed to be attending the conference but are not... it is now up to individual delegates whether they are truly voting with their conscience and that will determine how the race will fare.
