Palestine lobbying international leaders to reject Trump's statement

Western Cape Secretary General Faiez Jacobs is expected to call on African National Congress (ANC) delegates to vote in favour of a downgrade on the South African embassy in Israel, at the national conference this weekend.

Pro-Palestine demonstrators joined religious leaders in a march to Parliament on Wednesday, in support of global calls denouncing US President Donald Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Ray White spoke to Middle-East correspondent Paula Slier.

Slier says Palestine has been lobbying international leaders to reject Trump's statement.

We know for example that the American vice president was due to arrive in Israel to hold talks with the Israelis on Wednesday, he has postponed the trip and will be coming instead on Sunday. The Palestinians are rejecting that visit.

They saying that they are not having anything to do with the American administration in light of the comments that were made by Trump and they are appealing to the European Union, for example to the South African government, to any government in the world that will support them in their bid to denounce the statements that were made by the American president.

Meanwhile Israel's army has carried out a series of airstrikes on Hamas facilities in the Gaza Strip, reports Slier.

Overnight there were four rockets that were fired from Gaza at Southern Israel. One of them actually hit a school where fortunately there was no one in the building at the time. There have been 16 rockets that have been fired from Gaza since last Wednesday when Trump made these statements.
