UCT chemical engineer graduate Matimba Mabonda has shared the story of how he overcame depression and other obstacles to obtain his degree.
Mabonda says his father, who worked as tradesman, encouraged him to work hard and pursue the academic opportunities he never had.
He matriculated with six distinctions and was offered a bursary to study further.
But in his second year, Mabonda struggled with mental health obstacles and the added strain of being far away from home, in Johannesburg.

He has encouraged any student feeling overwhelmed by university life and personal issues to seek support.
