ANC 2017 Elective Conference

Melanie Verwoerd: Zuma did not inspire delegates

While delivering his last speech as ANC president, President Jacob Zuma said that he bears no grudge against his fellow comrades who in the past said that he should 'be spoken to' and 'step down'.

He says they were merely expressing their views.

I want to say to you all comrades that I bear no grudge you are my comrades and you were expressing your views.'

Jacob Zuma

Many of you will be my leaders and you must know that I will work with you as I did before and I will have no ill-feelings because I know it is politics and it is the views you have.

Jacob Zuma

I prefer those who express their views than those who don't...

Jacob Zuma

Political analyst Melanie Verwoerd says Jacob Zuma's speech was the beginning of the end to the Jacob Zuma's era.

She says it was very worrying that he attacked the media who were reporting on the ANC and its internal disputes.

He didn't inspire the delegates greatly, says Verwoerd.

He didn't like people speaking out in the ANC, and he really went for the alliance as well as the veterans. So it was just a mix of things that he was doing.

Melanie Verwoerd, Political analyst

Before he stepped up there was almost 45 minutes of prayers and the ANC members were holding hands but when Jacob Zuma came it fell flat.

Melanie Verwoerd, Political analyst

Verwoerd says there was a lack of introspection with Zuma and lack of responsibility. Even if he wanted to take 'collective responsibility' he should have said we made mistakes and own-up.

I think that was what Madiba was good at and at to some extent even Thabo Mbeki...
