ANC 2017 Elective Conference

#ANC54 Three CNN journalists intimidated, threatened with arrest

Three CNN journalists have apparently been intimidated by security at the Nasrec Centre where the 54th African National Congress (ANC) conference is taking place.

The group are said to have crossed a barricade separating delegates from journalists, before being ushered to a room and told that they will be arrested.

They have now been released and allowed to leave.

Eusebius Mckaiser spoke to Eyewitness News (EWN) editor Katy Katopodis.

These three CNN journalists apparently breached the fence and they were taken to Room 20 and they were told that they will be taken to a police station and arrested. As it turns out they have now been released and allowed to leave.

Katy Katopodis, EWN editor

But it just talks to the broader issues that we are facing as the media here at this conference, draconian levels of security and dare I say intimidation.

Katy Katopodis, EWN editor

Speaking on some these and other barriers to media freedom, Katopodis says the restriction of movement speaks volumes.

When we asked the question why the fence, can it be taken down, we were told the fence is not negotiable. Why are you doing it? The answer there was well it is quite simple, they wanted to prevent their delegates from talking to the media.
