ANC 2017 Elective Conference

It is less likely that Ramaphosa will remove Jacob Zuma from power

Associate Professor in Public Law at UCT, Richard Calland thinks it is less likely that the newly appointed President of the ANC, Cyril Ramaphosa, will recall Jacob Zuma as President of the country before he could draft his SONA speech.

Calland says Ramaphosa win is a pyrrhic victory, where you lose as much as you win - a win in name only.

He says he calls it pyrrhic victory because Ramaphosa has a very divided top six and his supporters did not see it coming.

They'd hoped that David Mabuza will be isolated in the top six and they will be able to manage him but to have Ace Magashule come into the top six was a big blow.

While their candidate lost in the form of Dlamini-Zuma, the faction won. The premier league that's been built for the past 10 by building power within the ANC, that strategy has finally bore fruits last night.

Calland says for Ramaphosa to be able to remove Jacob Zuma from power he will have to convince David and Ace Magashule that they have to reset the ANC in order to win the election in 2019.

He says it could be a bit difficult becasue of Magashule implications to state capture and his links to the Guptas.

Whether the removal of Zuma will be possible is difficult to say given the outcome of the elections last night. I think it is less likely right now.
