How to mosquito-proof yourself if you're holidaying in a Malaria-area

Dr Lucille Bloomberg, from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, has outlined all you need to know about malaria; symptoms, treatment and preventative measures. Bloomberg says Mpumalanga, lower lying parts of Limpopo and Mozambique are malaria prone areas. She says the disease is dangerous because it’s rapidly progressive and it can get misdiagnosed.

Symptoms are flu-like; muscle soreness, fever, headaches, a sensation of cold with shivering. Malaria affects all the organs; organs are filled with red cells with parasites.

Bloomberg has stressed that the disease is treatable.

No one should be dying from malaria because it’s treatable. The incubation period is seven days and treatment must be as quick as possible. You must demand a malaria test.

The doctor gave the following tips on how to avoid getting bitten by malaria mosquitos.

From sunset to sunrise is when you need to protect yourself. When the sun goes down, you need to apply insect repellent, apply to exposed areas. Try to wear long socks and pants. A mosquito net is needed. Consider preventative drugs.
