'Universities graduating thousands of unemployable and under-educated graduates'

Nomalanga Mkhize, a history lecturer at Rhodes University, says the consequences of free higher education without proper planning and implementation include academics are going to teach larger classes.

We are already sitting in a system that is, in general, doesn’t have the capacity to deal with learners. Academics will have to do more admin because there will be fewer administrators hired. Academics will no longer be able to do research and stay up to date.

On Sunday, the Presidency has issued a statement saying the government will increase funding to support free higher education.

Mkhize has stressed the importance for academics to have the time and capacity to be able to do research.

When the President wakes and decides this kind of thing for his own ego he doesn’t think about the repercussions for the integrity of a university. When a young academic such as myself doesn’t have the time for research then we can’t compete internationally.

The lecturer says most higher education institutions are graduating thousands of unemployable and under-educated graduates because there is no capacity to produce a good graduate.
